When it comes to laundry, more isn’t always better — especially when it comes to detergent. It’s a common mistake: you see heavily soiled clothes or a big load and think “a little extra soap will help.” But using too much detergent can actually work against you.
At Willard Wash Laundromat, we’ve seen it all — and one of the most common causes of dull, stiff, or smelly clothes is simply using more soap than necessary.
Residue Buildup
Extra detergent doesn’t always rinse out. That leftover residue can cling to fabrics, leaving them feeling stiff or even causing skin irritation.
Trapped Dirt and Odors
Instead of rinsing away grime, excess suds can trap it in the fibers. Over time, that buildup can cause clothes — and even your washer — to smell less than fresh.
Washer Performance Issues
Too much soap creates buildup in the machine itself. That can lead to mold, mildew, and reduced efficiency over time.
For most washers, you only need a small amount of detergent — especially with today’s high-efficiency machines. Check your detergent bottle’s recommendations, but here’s a quick guide:
HE Washers: 1–2 tablespoons of detergent per load.
Standard Washers: ¼ cup or less.
Smaller loads: Even less!
Pro tip: If you don’t see many suds during the cycle, that’s actually a good thing — it means your clothes are rinsing properly.
All of our washers are high-efficiency commercial machines that are designed to use just the right amount of detergent and water. Whether you wash with us or at home, the goal is the same — fresh, clean clothes without the residue.
The bottom line: When it comes to laundry soap, less really is more. Using the right amount of detergent helps your clothes last longer, your washer stay cleaner, and your laundry smell fresher.
